Should I try to upgrade or just buy a new computer?
Contrary to popular belief, just because your computer has aged four or five years doesn't mean you have to buy a new one.
Sure a new computer sounds like a great idea but do you really need it? Buying a new computer can be quite a bit more expensive than
putting a little time and money into the one you already have. Here are a few things that can be upgraded on your computer to improve performance.
1. Memory- Adding more RAM to your computer is probably the first thing you want to invest in. If your computer has less than 1GB of RAM, adding extra memory will definately enhance the speed of your PC and programs will open much faster. Not sure how much RAM you have? In Windows, click Start and go to your Control Panel. In Control Panel, click on the System Icon. Under the General Tab you will see the amount of RAM you have.
2. Hard Drive- Although most computers come with hard drives that have more than enough space on them, some may still need to upgrade. A 250-300GB hard drive should be more than enough space for the average computer user. One thing to consider that most people overlook is the speed of their hard drive. Hard drives have a disk inside that spins and it is measured in Rotations per Minute(RPM). The faster the disk spins the faster it finds the information you are looking for. Many standard hard drives are 5400RPM. I recommend getting one that is at least 7200RPM. There are even some that are 10,000RPM. These are a lot more expensive though.
3. Video Card- If you are a gamer and your computer doesnt support some games, then upgrading your video card would be a much cheaper solution than buying a new computer. There are several different grades of video cards. Finding one that supports all of todays games and applications should be fairly inexpensive and easy.
4. Monitor- Try getting a new flat panel LCD monitor to spice up your computer. Flat panel moitors are becoming much more affordable these days. They take up a lot less room than its ancestor monitors. Getting one of these bad boys can greatly improve your computing experience.
If you are looking into upgrading processors and motherboards then you may want to consider going out and getting yourself a whole new rig.
IT'S MUCH EASIER!!!!
